What a good couple of days. I went to Lincoln to get some riding in, and to escape from work and my laptop. The Surly was getting a little lonely so I thought I'd bring him with to Lincoln. I probably needed to get some riding in on my Bontrager, but the Surly was the right bike for the job. I enjoy the town riding in Lincoln, but there are two great trails, Wilderness and Mopac that I frequent. Wilderness was still a bit mushy (didn't want to damage the trail) so I took an across town ride to the trailhead of Mopac and headed to the metropolis of Eagle, NE. It was a great ride, so good I did it again the next day. Two days of about 35-40 miles. I reluctantly, brought my Camelback along, but it was good I did. Fruit roll-ups in the Camelback were my pseudo energy food midway through the ride. It was quite warm there, between 70 and 80.
One of my first stops was to the local bike shops. Definitely my favorite shop that I've been to:
http://www.monkeywrenchcycles.com/
They have great advice, no-nonsense equipment, and a great appreciation for all things biking related. Stop by if you're ever in town. Check out the vintage and custom build pages on that site too.
The bike culture is really great in Lincoln, definitely miss that part of it. Goes well with the coffee culture too:)
I eventually found a great tire, a $20 WTB Interwolf. It did great in all the conditions I saw. It's a tad heavy at 470g, but is so cheap, and had a great fast center section, I rode dirt, sand on concrete, and full limestone. I think I should find a Cross Wolf or Ritchey Speedmax pro to try next. It seems I need slightly more bite, and slightly more width 32-35 than what I have. The Michelin sprints are just a little too smooth for some of the long gravel hills I've seen. Funniest part, is the Sprints are "32" and they're just as wide as the "38" interwolf, go figure.
Hope you all enjoyed the weather as I did.

Keep working on that tire research. I'm looking for a light, durable, and cheap tire. But I can only seem to find two of the three (sometimes only one).
We should talk tires sometime.
Sure thing Paul. I just picked up a Ritchey Pro Speedmax 32 from Performance. They are on sale for $25. I can't vouch for durable yet, but at 320g they're definitely light. They've got a little bit more tread than I'll need on the road, but they should do well on gravel.
uh, dude, i was in lincoln the weekend you were there, too. we need to hook up and share the driving. ill be going west again the first weekend in april, if you want to try wilderness again.
