Hayden-Toyota BLAST

Last night I took my dirt-drop wearin, big tire spinnin, celeste bar tape covered, Single-Speed Surly for a ride. By the time I was freed up last night, it was 8:30. So I strapped on the lights to the aformentioned Surly and headed out. Here's the route:

It started out as just a quick ride up to Ada Hayden. But as you can see, turned into a cross-town adventure. I ended up making it all the way to the Toyota dealership. There were a few instances that I definitely had to slow down for cars, but for the most part my lights did the job of warning folks of my presence. The Surly was just as lively as ever. Steel is real. It wasn't just the tires and wheel build. I put the 42 width tires at about 60 pounds. It was perfect, slow to get them started with a 46/18 gear but with the momentum up I was able to fly. Only thing that worried me was the thought of "a cross setup would be a little less comfy (assuming ~32 width) and a 29er might be a bit slow with the even fatter tires". I was still able to jump and ride through the rough stuff with this setup. Anyway, enough bike techy-ness.

My main reason for blogging this stuff, is to see if anyone would be interested in a cross-town alleycat style fun race, I've dubbed it the "Hayden-Toyota Blast". I've watched some videos of courier races and thought I could maybe do something similar. There could be checkpoints, where you would have to pick something up to show that you went to that point. The other rules would be "why the heck would you cheat?". I thought maybe some night this summer, or even a weekend. I liked the added fun of a night ride with lights. The bikes could be anything, because this route gives advantages to all types at different sections. I'd imagine 3 1st places: 1st overall, 1st fixed/SS, most "colorful" rider and/or bike. The route would be something similar to what I mapped below. I would probably link it through a couple more trails, and slightly safer routes:

It would take some organization. Probably need to setup something for the check points. But I would probably ride in it myself. Let me know if there's interest in something like this.
