Finally picked up the Kona I talked so much about. I picked it up from the great folks at Monkey Wrench. Even though the heat was scorching in the arid state of Nebraska, I had to get out to Wilderness Trail. I ran it through its paces. Just as expected, the big wheels made up for a non-steel frame. I got a couple questions "how is different than your Bontrager". I hesistated for a second at first, but after riding it, everything was different. Climbed different, cornered different, descended different. I am very glad I have the 29er perspective finally under my belt, and scandium too. Here's some pics:

Very nice! Nice components too. Would be a shame to single it, but it's gotta be great to have that option. Can't wait to see it in person.
Thanks, and I agree. The owner of Monkey Wrench mentioned he had one he road as a SS. It's uber quick on the singletrack. Let me know when you are back in Ames. Have a safe trip.
Congrats on the new ride and welcome to the cult of 29.
Alex, even on my poorman's 29er that I rode at 7 Oaks I was instantly converted to "the new order." I knew that riding gravel on it was nice, but railing it through some of that singletrack was an awakening. Now to find the $ to do it right. Nice bike, race it sometime. Iowa City should be a great 9er race. Later! Travel Gravel!
Thanks Paul. The 29 club is great. I suppose we still need 26” for super technical, which means mountains, which means, not Iowa.
Grit. Saw your blog, uber kudos on the Ragbrai, trailered, gravel ride plans. The 29er club is even sweeter when you do it for < 50 bucks and a hammer to the chainstay bridge You really had more of a Monster Cross setup with that hybrid frame. I think that’d be great for the nastiest of gravel rides, and some singletrack. Just throw some dirt drop style bars on there and you’re set!
